Finally! In March 2010, MOE had announced the setting up of the English Language Institute of Singapore (ELIS) in 2011 and as per their plans they launched it last week. The English Language Institute of Singapore will provide teacher training and consultancy services to schools on the teaching of English. ELIS hopes to do this by promoting innovative ideas in English Language teaching strategies and supporting schools in deepening teacher capability in EL teaching. The longer term aim of ELIS is to become a Centre of Excellence for the teaching of EL in Asia and beyond. We at Grammar Grabber wish ELIS every success in its endeavor.

During the June holidays …

It had been a busy month for Grammar Grabber in June. We had over 250 students signing up to hone their grammar skills and cumulatively they did about 55 000 questions. These students were mostly from Sembawang Primary School, Montford Junior and West View Primary School.

That was totally unexpected and we hope all of you who had signed up continue to keep us busy by logging on often to practice. As of today the total number of questions completed stands at 162 703 and the numbers are still going up.

A big welcome to all the boys and girls from 6/4 of Farrer Park Primary. Thanks for the enthusiasm you have shown so far. Congratulations to the top two Grammar Grabbers from your class. They are Tan He Zhong and Ng Guan Ying. The two of them have achieved this feat in record time. We look forward to the rest of you joining them at the top.

I read an interesting article in the newspaper by Shuli Sudderuddin in The Straits Times today. It was about the changes in the way grammar will be taught in schools from now on in Singapore. Although the teaching of grammar has been made more explicit since 2001, the MOE has realised that this approach needs to be pursued more intensely. Hence one of their strategies to get students to communicate more efffectiveley in English would be to put a greater emphasis on the systematic and explicit instruction of grammar.

Shuli also quotes retired teacher Ellen Toh who applauds the return to explicit grammar instruction as she feels that the lack of firm grounding in grammar has led to the deterioration in the standard of English. I echo Ellen’s views as the way I was taught grammar in primary school was explicit with emphasis on and proper understanding of grammar rules. This gave me a firm foundation in the early years of my education and I am confident that the present generation will benefit as well from this crucial shift in strategy.
